Chapter Nine
An alarmed blared.
Lanceâs eyes popped open, and he sat up on the couch. Shadow burst free from the tat on his back and floated underneath the cabin door, leaving Lance alone in the cabin. Lance rushed over to his alarm system to see which trap had been triggered. Shit, it was the one closest to the cabin. The vamps had made it past all of his other traps.
They were now heading to his home. His gaze drifted to his bedroom door that was slowly opening. Ivy stepped from the room, rubbing her eyes. Sheâd changed into some of his clothes. A pair of brown slacks and a white t-shirt. Her nipples showed through the threadbare fabric of the shirt. He forced his gaze away.
âWhatâs that noise?â Ivy asked.
Staring at his alarm system, he told her, âThe vamps have made it past my traps.â
âI told you traps couldnât stop vampires,â she boasted.
âThe lights surrounding the house will slow them down. Stay here. Iâm goingâ¦â
âYouâre going out there to fight the vamps?â
âYes. Donât worry. I wonât let themâ¦â
âIâm coming with you.â She moved forward.
âNo. You will stay here.â
âI wonât.â
âWickedâ¦â
âLance, Iâm a witch. I can help.â
âYou couldnât even use your powers against Shadow.â
She frowned. âIâm⦠a little rusty. But even if my powers donât work, I can fight.â
He stared her up and down. She was a curvy little thing. Sexy. But she didnât look like a fighter.
âItâll be safer for you here.â
âAnd youâll be safer with me next to you.â
Lance laughed.
âIâm not making a joke,â she told him. âOkay.â She folded her arms over her chest. âGo. Fight. Iâll just wait until you leave and follow you.â
âYouâ¦â
âMe,â she told him, chin raised in defiance.
And to think, Shadow wanted to keep her. Sheâd disobey them at every turn and do silly things that would put her life in danger. She was exactly the type of trouble he didnât need.
âIf you die,â he told her. âYour blood isnât on my hands.â
âAnd when you survive, you can thank me later. Lead the way, demon.â She smiled.
His chest constricted.
âYou okay?â She asked, rushing to his side.
He pushed her hands away when she tried to touch him. âIâm fine.â Was he? Shortness of breath. Chest pains. What the hell was wrong with him? The skull at his neck moved. Shadow was about to update him on the situation outside.
âThereâs ten of them. Iâve taken down three. Four are heading straight for the cabin. Iâm hunting down the ones heading for the mountain.â
Wicked stared in shock at his tat. âDid your neck tattoo just talk?â
âYou heard it?â
âIâ¦â
âItâs Shadow. Itâs how we communicate sometimes.â Others had been able to see the tat move. None had been able to hear the words it spewed. Not even Merlin. It was strange that this witch could. Leaving her behind was no longer an option. She was determined to follow him. âIf youâre coming, letâs go,â he told Wicked.
âIâm coming.â
Lance led the way. On the porch, he stared out into the night. âDonât leave the porch,â he told her.
