Chapter Nine

An alarmed blared.

Lance’s eyes popped open, and he sat up on the couch. Shadow burst free from the tat on his back and floated underneath the cabin door, leaving Lance alone in the cabin. Lance rushed over to his alarm system to see which trap had been triggered. Shit, it was the one closest to the cabin. The vamps had made it past all of his other traps.

They were now heading to his home. His gaze drifted to his bedroom door that was slowly opening. Ivy stepped from the room, rubbing her eyes. She’d changed into some of his clothes. A pair of brown slacks and a white t-shirt. Her nipples showed through the threadbare fabric of the shirt. He forced his gaze away.

“What’s that noise?” Ivy asked.

Staring at his alarm system, he told her, “The vamps have made it past my traps.”

“I told you traps couldn’t stop vampires,” she boasted.

“The lights surrounding the house will slow them down. Stay here. I’m going…”

“You’re going out there to fight the vamps?”

“Yes. Don’t worry. I won’t let them…”

“I’m coming with you.” She moved forward.

“No. You will stay here.”

“I won’t.”

“Wicked…”

“Lance, I’m a witch. I can help.”

“You couldn’t even use your powers against Shadow.”

She frowned. “I’m… a little rusty. But even if my powers don’t work, I can fight.”

He stared her up and down. She was a curvy little thing. Sexy. But she didn’t look like a fighter.

“It’ll be safer for you here.”

“And you’ll be safer with me next to you.”

Lance laughed.

“I’m not making a joke,” she told him. “Okay.” She folded her arms over her chest. “Go. Fight. I’ll just wait until you leave and follow you.”

“You…”

“Me,” she told him, chin raised in defiance.

And to think, Shadow wanted to keep her. She’d disobey them at every turn and do silly things that would put her life in danger. She was exactly the type of trouble he didn’t need.

“If you die,” he told her. “Your blood isn’t on my hands.”

“And when you survive, you can thank me later. Lead the way, demon.” She smiled.

His chest constricted.

“You okay?” She asked, rushing to his side.

He pushed her hands away when she tried to touch him. “I’m fine.” Was he? Shortness of breath. Chest pains. What the hell was wrong with him? The skull at his neck moved. Shadow was about to update him on the situation outside.

“There’s ten of them. I’ve taken down three. Four are heading straight for the cabin. I’m hunting down the ones heading for the mountain.”

Wicked stared in shock at his tat. “Did your neck tattoo just talk?”

“You heard it?”

“I…”

“It’s Shadow. It’s how we communicate sometimes.” Others had been able to see the tat move. None had been able to hear the words it spewed. Not even Merlin. It was strange that this witch could. Leaving her behind was no longer an option. She was determined to follow him. “If you’re coming, let’s go,” he told Wicked.

“I’m coming.”

Lance led the way. On the porch, he stared out into the night. “Don’t leave the porch,” he told her.
